Volleyball Split Tri-match with USMMA & Mt. St. Mary

NEWBURGH, N.Y.—The MCLA Volleyball Team finished up the road portion of their 2024 schedule this afternoon when they traveled to Mt. St. Mary's for a non-conference tri-match with the Knights and the Merchant Marine Academy Mariners at the Kaplan Center. Elizabeth Brown finished the first match with a game-high 16 kills, but the Mariners took the match by a score of 3-1. Chloie Garber had 14 kills in the nightcap, and Kaylee Gray chipped in another 10 in MCLA's 3-1 win.
MATCH #1:

- Records: U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Mariners 16-6 (Skyline 7-2) | MCLA Trailblazers 9-16 (MASCAC 3-3)
- Series History: First-ever meeting between the teams.
HOW IT WENT DOWN (Game #1)
- The teams split the first two sets with the Merchant Marine Academy taking the first set 25-20 and MCLA taking the second set 25-18 before the Mariners finished off the match by taking the third and fourth sets 26-24 and 25-19.
- Junior outside hitter Elizabeth Brown (Lee, MA) finished with a game-high 16 kills and was joined by senior right-side Chloie Garber (Eagle River, AK), who had 12 kills. Erin Stillinger led the Mariners with USMMA with 14 kills.
- Garber added four service aces, two solo blocks, and another assisted block to total out the match with 18.5 points, just ahead of Brown's 17.5 points. Brown also had a game-high 21 digs.
MATCH #2:
- Score: MCLA 3, Mt. St. Mary 1
- Records: MCLA Trailblazers 10-16 (MASCAC 3-3) | Mt. St. Mary College Purple Knights 8-18 (Skyline 4-5)
- Series History: The teams entered play today with an all-time record of 1-1 as MCLA took the last meeting by the score of 3-1 on October 1, 2016. Mt. St. Mary won the teams' first meeting by the score of 3-0 as part of a tri-match at Salem State on October 15, 2011.
HIGHLIGHTS (Game #2)
- Same as the Trailblazers' first match of the day, the teams split the first set with MCLA taking the first set 25-19 and the hosts taking the second 25-23. The Trailblazers then won the final two sets 25-23 and 25-19.
- Mt. St. Mary's Jonaiya Williams finished with a game-high 16 kills while Garber paced MCLA with 14 kills.
- Senior libero Ezmeralda Albright (Loves Park, IL) had a game-high 32 digs while Garber added on 20, and Brown accounted for 17.
UP NEXT:
On Saturday, MCLA will be back in action when they play host to Worcester State for a MASCAC matchup with the Lancers in the Amsler Campus Center Gymnasium. The match is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start. Fans are advised to arrive early as there will be a celebration of the graduating class prior to the game.
